Microorganisms that live in extreme environments and can survive in high temperature, high pressure, and high salinity environments. Archaea are similar to bacteria but are genetically very different and are more closely related to eukaryotes. Archaea are estimated to be among the oldest life forms on Earth and evolved in the extreme environments of early Earth.
